 Milkha Singh (Born 1935)
Till date the 'Flying Sikh' is the only Indian to have broken an Olympic record. Unfortunately, he was the fourth athlete to reset the mark and thus missed the bronze medal in the 400m event at the Rome Olympics in 1960.

Even more tragic was the fact that Milkha could have won a medal in the 200m event had the timings not clashed with those for the 400. But of course, he could always boast of the 200m gold at the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games and the 440-yard gold at the 1960 Jamaica Commonwealth Games in addition to beating the Pakistani ace sprinter, Abdul Khalique, in the 200m during an Indo-Pak meet.
His secret was the tremendous stamina and temperament he gained while running to his school across fields when his other classmates would be satisfied with walking. And, of course, hard training which the Flying Sikh has failed to observe in the present generation.
