Chholar Dal (Chana Dal)

- 1 cup Bengal gram dal
- 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
- 1 Green chilli
- 2 teaspoons Cumin powder
- 1 Bay leaf
- 2 Red chillies
- 5 Cardamoms (green)
- 2 pieces Cinnamon

- 2 Cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon Onion seeds
- 2 tablespoons Raisins
- 1/2 teaspoon Garam masala
- 2 tablespoons Mustard oil
- 1 teaspoon Sugar
- 2 tablespoons Grated coconut
- Salt (As per taste)

Method |
Soak the chana dal overnight in 4 cups of water. Boil the dal with water, turmeric and one slit green chilli till completely tender. Discard the green chilli. Add salt and cumin powder. Cook on a low flame for one minute. Remove from heat and cool slightly. Puree the dal in a blender or just churn it with a little water. Add the raisins and simmer.
Heat oil in a deep bottomed pan, add the bay leaf and red chilli. Fry until the chilli changes colour. Add the cardamoms, cinnamon and cloves. Fry for 5-7 seconds. Add the onion seeds and fry for a few more seconds. Add chopped green chillies, sugar, coconut and saute for a few seconds, stirring constantly. Pour the dal into this mixture. Simmer for 5 minutes. Add the garam masala powder.
Garnish with lemon wedges or coriander leaves or green chillies and ghee. Serve hot with steamed rice.
