 Vatral Kuzhambu (Spicy Tamarind Curry) 
Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons Tamarind paste
  • 150 grams Sambhar onions
  • 2 tablespoons Grated jaggery
  • 2 tablespoons Gram flour (besan)
  • 3 tablespoons Sesame oil
  • 2 Red chillies
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Toovar dal
  • 1 teaspoon Bengal gram dal
  • 1 teaspoon Urad dal
  • 1/2 teaspoon Fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Asafoetida
  • Few Curry leaves
  • Salt(As per taste)
Method
Soak the tamarind in 2 cups water and set aside.

Heat 3 tablespoons oil and add the mustard seeds, red chillies, asafoetida powder and fenugreek seeds. When the mustard seeds start spluttering, add the toovar dal, Bengal gram dal, urad dal and curry leaves. Fry till the dals turn golden. Add the onions and fry for a couple of minutes. Add the sambhar powder. Fry for a minute. Add the tamarind juice, salt and jaggery. Cover and simmer on a low heat for about ten minutes or till the raw smell of the tamarind disappears.

Mix the bengal gram flour with 1/2 cup water to make a smooth batter. Add to the tamarind gravy. Boil for a couple of minutes.

Serve hot with rice.
