The Mountain Goddess
Vaishno Devi, also known as Mata Rani and Vaishnavi, is a manifestation of the Hindu goddess Mahalakshmi. The shrine, located in the Trikuta Mountains of Jammu & Kashmir, is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world, attracting over 8 million devotees annually.
According to legend, the goddess took refuge in this cave to escape the demon Bhairavnath. After a battle at the cave entrance, she vanquished Bhairavnath, whose head fell at a spot 2.5 km away — now the location of Bhairav Temple. The goddess then merged into the rock in the form of three pindis (natural rock formations).
The pilgrimage involves a 13-kilometer trek from Katra through mountainous terrain, considered an act of devotion and penance. The journey symbolizes the spiritual ascent from material existence to divine consciousness.
