The Mountain Goddess

Vaishno Devi, also known as Mata Rani and Vaishnavi, is a manifestation of the Hindu goddess Mahalakshmi. The shrine, located in the Trikuta Mountains of Jammu & Kashmir, is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world, attracting over 8 million devotees annually.

According to legend, the goddess took refuge in this cave to escape the demon Bhairavnath. After a battle at the cave entrance, she vanquished Bhairavnath, whose head fell at a spot 2.5 km away — now the location of Bhairav Temple. The goddess then merged into the rock in the form of three pindis (natural rock formations).

The pilgrimage involves a 13-kilometer trek from Katra through mountainous terrain, considered an act of devotion and penance. The journey symbolizes the spiritual ascent from material existence to divine consciousness.

The Holy Cave

The sanctum sanctorum is a natural cave where the goddess manifests as three natural rock formations (pindis) representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati.

A sacred cave midway through the trek where the goddess is believed to have meditated for nine months. Pilgrims crawl through this narrow cave as part of the journey.

Bhairav Temple

Located 2.5 km beyond the main shrine, this temple is dedicated to Bhairavnath. The pilgrimage is considered incomplete without visiting this temple.
