Medieval India's Greatest Art
The Khajuraho Group of Monuments consists of Hindu and Jain temples built between 950 and 1050 CE by the Chandela dynasty. Originally 85 temples existed, of which 25 survive today in remarkable condition.
The temples are famous for their stunning sculptural art depicting all aspects of life — from courtly scenes and warfare to music, dance, and famously, erotic sculptures that constitute about 10% of the total artwork. These represent tantric philosophy and the celebration of life in all its forms.
The temples follow a sophisticated architectural plan representing Mount Meru, the mythological home of the gods. Each temple rises in successive platforms culminating in a towering shikhara (spire), symbolizing the cosmic mountain.
