About the Temple

The Abode of Lord Shiva

Kedarnath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva, and one of the four sites in India's Char Dham pilgrimage. Located at an altitude of 3,583 metres near the head of the Mandakini river, it is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and breathtaking Himalayan vistas.

According to legend, the temple was built by the Pandavas after the Kurukshetra war to seek Lord Shiva's blessings for redemption. The current structure is believed to have been built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE adjacent to an earlier temple built by the Pandavas.

The temple is built of large, heavy stone slabs over a rectangular platform. The walls are beautifully carved, and the conical shikhara displays excellent craftsmanship. The temple miraculously survived the devastating 2013 Uttarakhand floods, protected by a large boulder.
