About the Temple

The Golden Temple of Amritsar

Harmandir Sahib, meaning "Temple of God," was founded by Guru Ram Das in 1577 and completed by Guru Arjan Dev in 1604. The temple was designed with four entrances, symbolizing openness to all four castes and all peoples.

The current gold plating was done by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the early 19th century. The temple sits in the middle of the Amrit Sarovar (Pool of Nectar), from which Amritsar city takes its name. Pilgrims circumambulate the sacred pool before entering.

What makes Harmandir Sahib truly unique is its embodiment of Sikh principles: the Guru Ka Langar serves free meals to over 100,000 visitors daily, regardless of religion, demonstrating the Sikh values of equality, community, and selfless service.
