The Big Temple of Thanjavur
Brihadeeswarar Temple, also known as Peruvudaiyar Kovil or the Big Temple, was built by Raja Raja Chola I between 1003 and 1010 CE. It represents the pinnacle of Chola architecture and is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The temple's vimana (tower) rises to 216 feet, making it one of the tallest temple towers in the world. The crowning glory is an 80-ton monolithic capstone that was raised to the top using a 6-kilometer inclined ramp — an engineering marvel.
Remarkably, the temple's shadow never falls on the ground at noon, and the entire structure was built without using mortar, relying on interlocking stones. It remains a testament to the scientific and artistic achievements of the Chola Empire.
